Signing Instructions

CBSA permits certifications to be completed and submitted electronically, including with an electronic or digital signature (CBSA guidance). Before relying on a typed name in Field 11a, confirm the signing method with your customs broker or the receiving customs authority.

Complete and review all applicable fields before signing. Keep your completed certification and supporting origin records together.

Before Submitting

Confirm that the goods qualify under the applicable USMCA/CUSMA rules of origin before completing the certification. Ask your customs broker or trade-compliance adviser to review any uncertain classifications, origin criteria, or signing requirements.

  • The USMCA / CUSMA Certificate of Origin allows for preferential tariff treatment (duty-free entry) of eligible goods traded between Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Proper certification is the required first step to claiming these benefits; each document must contain the 9 mandatory data elements outlined in Article 5.2. A valid Certificate must be completed and in the importer's possession at the time of entry so Customs can verify the origin of the goods and waive applicable duties.
